The Nissan Titan is a full-size pickup truck produced in the American market by Nissan Motors. The truck shares the stretched Nissan F-Alpha platform with the Nissan Armada and Infiniti QX56 SUVs, and is manufactured in Canton, Mississippi.
Market and sales
The Titan was created to challenge the market-leading Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra, Dodge Ram, and Toyota Tundra. In particular, Toyota had been unable to break into the North American fullsize truck market since its 1993 introduction of the smallish T100, and Tundra sales since its 1999 introduction, while good, were still off compared to GM or Ford. The Tundra hovered just over 100,000 units annual sales when the larger Titan was introduced, while the Ram sold 400,000 and the Silverado/Sierra and F-Series sold 900,000 annually. During the first full year of production (December 2003 to December 2004), 85,920 Titans were sold, while the Dodge Ram declined somewhat and the F-150 jumped to nearly 950,000. 86,945 Titans were sold in 2005. 126,529 Toyota Tundras were sold in 2005.
Models and equipment
The Titan features the 5.6 L VK56DE V8 engine which generates 305 hp (227 kW) at 4900 rpm and 379 ft·lbf (514 N·m) of torque at 3600 rpm. It is available in either rear wheel drive or four wheel drive with a 5-speed automatic transmission. It comes with a choice of a Crew Cab with a 5'7" bed or King (extended) Cab with a 6'5" bed.Features
The Nissan Titan comes in three basic trim levels: XE, SE, and LE. The trim levels are combinations of the features offered on the truck which include:- Navigation system
- DVD player with screen
- Side airbags
- Off-road package
- Sunroof
- Big Tow Package
- Sirius Satellite Radio
- XM Satellite Radio
- Leather Split Power Bench Seat
- Utili-Track bed rail system
Reception
Upon its release, the Titan was praised for its combination of a roomy interior, strong towing capacity, aggressive styling and innovative features, such as wide opening rear doors in the King Cab and a lockable storage compartment outside the bed on the driver's side. It was listed by Edmunds.com as the best full-size truck. The Titan was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award for 2004.The Titan has also been criticized for limited body styles. In contrast to the F-Series, which is offered with a mind-boggling array of engine, bed, and cab configurations, the Titan is only available with the 5.6 liter V8 and two body styles. Also, there is no budged-minded V6 regular cab, as well as a long bed or diesel engine offered.
Safety
The Titan has a 5-star rating from the NHTSA for driver frontal crash, and a 4-star rating for passenger frontal crash.

Future
According to the Wall Street Journal, Nissan is planning a heavy-duty version of the Titan, to compete with the F-250/F-350, the Silverado 2500/3500, and the Ram 2500/3500. Not much is known about it except that it is expected to be released in late 2009.External links
