Nival

Encyclopedia : N : NI : NIV : Nival

Nival is a Russian video game developer, with its main development studio based in Moscow. According to some sources, it is one of the largest developers in the country.

Nival's primary focus is on real-time strategy games. Its best-known products would probably be Etherlords, Blitzkrieg, and Silent Storm. The company has recently released the fifth game in the Heroes of Might and Magic series, a franchise owned by Ubisoft.

Nival was founded in 1996 by Sergey Orlovskiy. In early 2005, the company was bought by Ener1 Group, a Florida-based holdings company, for around US$10 million. Ener1 has stated that it will "integrate Nival's artists, designers, and programmers with its US-based video gaming interests", although there is confusion as to what this means, as Ener1 is not yet known to have any involvement with video games other than Nival. Ener1 has also stated an intention to turn Nival's resources towards development for consoles — until now, all Nival's games have been for the PC. As of 2006, the corporate headquarters is now located in Los Angeles, California, under CEO Kevin Bachus (one of the creators of the original Xbox), while the main development team remains in Moscow.
