No. 36 Squadron is a Royal Australian Air Force transport squadron. The Squadron was first formed in 1942 and currently operates C-130H Hercules aircraft from RAAF Base Richmond.
No. 36 Squadron has seen active service flying transport aircraft during World War II, the Berlin Airlift, Korean War, Vietnam War and the invasion of Iraq in 2003. The Squadron has also supported Australian peacekeeping operations around the world, including in Somalia, Cambodia and East Timor.
Under current plans, No. 36 Squadron will be equipped with 3 or 4 C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft and transition to the strategic airlift role from late 2006. These aircraft will be operated from RAAF Base Amberley.[link] Up to 6 C-130H aircraft may be retained to support special forces operations.
