No. 66 Squadron RAAF

No. 66 Squadron was a Royal Australian Air Force maritime patrol squadron of World War II. The Squadron was only active for less than eight months before being disbanded.
No. 66 Squadron was formed from elements of No. 8 Flying Training School at Bundaberg, Queensland on 20 May 1943. The Squadron was formed an emergency measure in response to Japanese submarine attacks off the Australian east coast. Operating Avro Anson aircraft the Squadron began flying anti-submarine and convoy escort patrols immediately upon formation. Following the reduction of Japanese submarine activity in late 1943 the need for anti-submarine aircraft lessened and No. 66 Squadron was disbanded on 6 January 1944. While the Squadron flew over 1000 patrols during its brief existence it did not sight any enemy submarines or see combat.
