Nobel, Ontario
Encyclopedia : N : NO : NOB : Nobel, Ontario
Nobel is a village located on the picturesque shores of Parry Sound. It is located in the Municipality of McDougall in the District of Parry Sound.
Nobel is named after Alfred Nobel, because it was once the home of an explosives and munition factory during the great wars of the Twentieth Century. The plant blew up during WWI and an ammunitions dump at Depot Harbour blew up "mysteriously" VE Day. The explosion and consequent fire contaminated Depot Harbour. Nobel is of historical interest to Canadians because it was home of the Orenda Engines factory where the Iroquois gas turbine engine was being developed. This engine was slated to power the ill-fated Avro Arrow until the project was cancelled by the Diefenbaker Government.
