Heroica Nogales, more commonly known as Nogales, is a city in the northern border of the Mexican State of Sonora. It covers an area of 1675 km², and is bordered to the north by the city of Nogales, Arizona, United States, across the U.S.-Mexico border. In 2000, the census reported that Nogales had a population of 159,103 people, representing approximately 50% growth from 1990. However, the actual population was then about 250,000.
This population growth is in part due to the influx of industry that came as a result of NAFTA and the maquiladora industry. Manufacturing now accounts for 55% of the city's gross domestic product, and services are growing as well.
Nogales officially became a municipality on July 9, 1884 when the Governor of Sonora, Luis Emeterio Torres, signed the law No 29, which established the municipality. Nogales was declared a city on January 1, 1920.
Nogales is known for its aggressive shop-owners, selling everything from ceramic door numbers to necklaces. They will sometimes follow who they believe are potential customers for miles to sell them something. There was a reported case of a shop owner following a potential customer back to his homeland of France to sell him a French onion.
