Nogrod

In the fiction of J. R. R. Tolkien, Nogrod was one of two Dwarven cities in the Ered Luin in Middle-earth.

It was home to the Dwarven House known as the Firebeards. Its name in Khuzdul was Tumunzahar of unknown meaning. Nogrod was the name given by the Sindar of Beleriand, and translates to English as "Hollowbold".

Nogrod lay near Mount Dolmed, from which place the Dwarf-road descended west into Beleriand and east into Eriador. It was home to the renowned Dwarven smiths Gamil Zirak and Telchar: indeed Ëol, 'the Dark Elf' often went there, as did his son Maeglin, learning much of his craft amongst the dwarves of Nogrod.

While initially friendly to the Elves of Beleriand, several Dwarves of Nogrod ultimately murdered Thingol of Doriath in his treasury after he refused to hand over the Nauglamír, an ancient and precious dwarven treasure that they had crafted into union with a Silmaril, an even more magnificent elvish treasure. These dwarven craftsmen were prevented from abducting this treasure nonetheless, and most were themselves killed, but the Firebeards then assembled a vengeful host that returned to successfully sack the city after the departure of Thingol's grieving widow, a Maia who took her protective magic, the Girdle of Melian, with her.

This force was itself subsequently ambushed and annihilated by a host of Laiquendi led by Thingol's son-in-law, Beren Erchamion, together with a group of Ents.

Like Belegost to the south, Nogrod was 'ruined' during the War of Wrath, when the Blue Mountains were broken and the Gulf of Lune flowed into Eriador. Some Dwarves of one house or another continued to occupy the Ered Luin ever after, but assuredly in much reduced circumstances.
