North Tonight
Encyclopedia : N : NO : NOR : North Tonight
North Tonight is stv's nightly news programme covering the North of Scotland. Scotland Today covers stv's Central Scotland region. The show is broadcast live at 6pm from Monday to Friday. Its daily equivalent, North Today is shown at various points throughout the day, with its main bulletin during the Lunchtime News at 1.10pm. Significant points in North Tonights history include the coverage of the Piper Alpha disaster in 1988 and the resignation of Dr. Ian Oliver who was Chief Constable of Grampian Police in 1998. North Tonight' also covered the murder of Aberdeen schoolboy, Scott Simpson in the mid-nineties. Its predecessor, Grampian Today, had the first live broadcast from an oil platform in the North Sea, as well as the first live broadcast from the summit of Cairn Gorm.
The programme is aired from Aberdeen, and has studios in Inverness, Dundee and Stornoway. The programme had a recent facelift adopting similar opening titles to Scotland Today, stv's Central Scotland news show.
It is intended that North Tonight will receive a total makeover at the same time as its Southern counterpart Scotland Today when the latter moves to studios at Pacific Quay, Glasgow in the summer of 2006 [link].
