Nu (Chrono Trigger)
Encyclopedia : N : NU : NUC : Nu (Chrono Trigger)
The Nu is the most mysterious creature in the Square Co., Ltd. video game Chrono Trigger. They are blueish-purple, with long, stringy arms, small eyes, and a small tuft of green hair. Nus are always trying to find a place to sleep, and can be found in all time periods besides 1999 A.D.
- 65,000,000 B.C.: Nus are found in the hunting range when all the other animals flee during the rain. Additionally, a single Nu can be found in the gathering place toward the end of the game - this one will change your party members' names.
- 12,000 B.C.: Nus are "servants" to the Enlightened Ones in the Kingdom of Zeal. More Nus are found in this era than in any other. As alluded to earlier, they are almost always sleeping. Within a secret room in Enhasa, a book entitled "The Mystery of Life," vol. 841, chapter 26, authored by the Guru of Reason Belthasar, states "All life begins with Nu and ends with Nu. This is the truth! This is my belief! ...At least for now."
- 600 A.D.: Nus can be found hiding in the bushes of the Cursed Woods every now and then. These poor creatures are constantly being harassed by the T'poles and Gnashers who will not let them sleep in peace.
- 1000 A.D.: A Nu appears when you open the Forest Ruins. He disappears shortly afterwards.
- 2300 A.D.: A single Nu is seen in the Keeper's Dome, being tested by Belthasar. Eventually, Belthasar programs the Nu with his own consciousness, presumably allowing his original body to die. After helping Crono's party obtain the Epoch, there's the choice of "turning off" the Nu as it is sleeping like it asked. It affects little of the game, but turning it off will be permanent, and the game will only give a message saying "This creature sleeps beyond the flow of time."
- ∞: The final form of Spekkio (the magic trainer) is a red Nu. The Red Nu is quite possibly the most deadly enemy in the game, as it has 20,000 HP, very high magic defense, and use of all the game's ultimate techs. To fight this form, at least one character in the player's party must be at level 99.
It is rumored that the "Beach Bums" encountered in the early stages of Chrono Cross are based on Nus.
