Nurettin Pasha
Encyclopedia : N : NU : NUR : Nurettin Pasha
Nurettin Pasha (or, in keeping with the former spelling of his name, Nureddin Pasha) (often called "Nurettin Pasha the Bearded" Sakallı Nurettin Paşa, in Turkish sources since he was the only prominent Turkish officer during the 1919-1922 Greco-Turkish War who sported a beard) was a high ranking Turkish military officer who served in the Ottoman and later the Turkish Republican army during World War I (1914-1918) and the Greco-Turkish War (1919-1922).
He is extremely controversial as he issued orders for the killings of Greek and Armenian civilians in 1922 when his army took Smyrna from the Greeks.
