Nurgle
Encyclopedia : N : NU : NUR : Nurgle
In the fictional universe of Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer Fantasy, Nurgle is the god of disease, decay, consistency and the related concept of despair. He was the third of the four Chaos Gods to be awoken and the most involved with the plights of mortals. Many of those affected by his poxes usually turn to him in order to escape the pain caused by sickness. The physical likeness of Nurgle is described as a giant wormlike creature with a gaping, fang filled maw and thousands of open wounds. The traitorous Death Guard Chaos Space Marine Legion serves him alone, in Warhammer 40,000. In Warhammer Fantasy Battle he is also worshipped by the Skaven Clan Pestilens.
Nurgle's antithesis is Tzeentch, the Lord of Change, because, where Tzeentch seeks to build, change, plot, and scheme, Nurgle only seeks to destroy, decay, and break down.
Nurgle's sacred number is seven.
The symbol of Nurgle (three circles arranged in a triangular fashion) is a variation of the biohazard symbol.
Nurgle represents despair within the psyche of humanity. This is manifest in his dominion over entropic aspects of life such as disease and decay. He also represents the ability to endure suffering. For this reason he, his daemons and followers usually demonstrate a disturbing joviality and joy at the pestilence that he inflicts, seeing the plagues as gifts and the cries of their victims as gratitude rather than agony. Unlike the other Chaos Gods, who regard their subjects as mere pawns, Nurgle takes an almost grandfatherly interest in the plights of his mortal followers. He is often referred to as "Grandfather Nurgle," "Father Nurgle," or "Papa Nurgle."
Nurgle is also the Chaos god most associated with lingering death, as well as decay over time; and therefore his followers believe that he will be the cause of the ultimate end.
Nurgle's daemons
Various daemons are available to followers of Nurgle:- Nurglings resemble Orkish Snotlings, namely being tiny creatures that swarm their enemies. Unlike snotlings, they are bloated and disease ridden. Nurglings sometimes even infest a particularly devout follower of Nurgle, living in every abscess available, especially the ornate armor favored by chaos champions.
- Plaguebearers are rotting, wasted creatures of vaguely humanoid size and appearance, with a single burning eye. Flies continually buzz around them, therefore making them more difficult to fight. They are often referred to as the 'Tallymen of Nurgle' for they constantly strive to number the poxes and represent the need of humanity to impose order on a chaotic and uncaring universe. They will count anything they can, and when a mortal contracts the rot (a daemonic plague) he will slowly transorm physically if left untreated, until his soul becomes that of a plaguebearer
- Great Unclean Ones are massive, bloated disease carriers, whose decaying flesh bulges with corpulent cancers. They usually carry a massive, rusted blade known as a Plague Sword into battle, said to be dipped in the foul pus and contagion at the base of Nurgle's throne. Given their prodigious strength and the lethal miasma of disease that surrounds the Great Unclean Ones, they do not really need them. They generally act as the leaders and 'father-figures' for the other daemons, epitomizing Nurgle's joyful, paternal nature.
- Plague Riders are Beasts of Nurgle mounted by Plaguebearers.
- Chariots of Nurgle are composed of two Plaguebearers in a chariot, pulled by a Beast of Nurgle, sometimes two.
