Nyaw language

Encyclopedia : N : NY : NYA : Nyaw language

The Nyaw language is a dialect of the Isan or Lao language, with a few vocabulary, tonal and pronunciation differences. Speakers of the Nyaw language can be found mostly in the northeast portion of Thailand, and central Laos. In Thailand, this language group is increasingly becoming integrated into the mainstream Isan language. It is a good likelihood that in 25 years, very few true Nyaw speakers will remain. This is due to an aggressive campaign by the Thai government to modernise all Thais, as well as due to outside influences of television, internet and local radio broadcasts. Most younger members of northeastern tribal groups in Thailand prefer to be called Thais rather than by their traditional tribal group.
