OQO

Encyclopedia : O : OQ : OQO : OQO

OQO is the manufacturer of a subnotebook computer named the ultra Personal Computer (uPC). Their systems possess the functionality of a low-end tablet PC in a form-factor slightly larger than a PDA. OQO claims, as does Guinness World Records that the product is the smallest full-powered full-featured personal computer. The company's first version is called the OQO model 01.

The OQO model 01 was announced several years before prototypes were even seen, leading many people to call it vaporware until it was finally released in the fall of 2004. The computer shipped with Windows XP installed (Home Edition or Professional, but curiously, no Tablet PC Edition to complement its pen-input) and featured a 1 GHz Transmeta processor, 20 GB hard drive, and 256 MB of RAM. It included USB 1.1, FireWire 400, a headphone port, and a built-in microphone. It also included integrated 802.11b, as well as Bluetooth. It included a pressure-sensitive stylus for use with a graphics tablet built into its 800x480 transflective screen. It began to ship on October 14, 2004.

The OQO model 01+ was announced and released on September 27, 2005. Representing an incremental update to the model 01, the OQO model 01+ features a 30 GB hard drive, 512 MB of RAM, USB 2.0, and an internal speaker. It also adds support for portrait display mode (480x800) and has a redesigned screen bezel intended to improve the accuracy of its tablet.

The OQO model 01+ running on Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 was introduced on January 4, 2006, taking advantage of handwriting recognition and navigation.

Recently, it has been compared with the Ultra Mobile PC platform, although it was introduced before the UMPC took flight.

Criticism

PC World magazine ranked the OQO Model 01 as number 19 in its list of The 25 Worst Tech Products of All Time, with this explanation: You needed a magnifying glass to read icons or text on its 5-by-3-inch screen, and the hide-away keypad was too tiny to accommodate even two adult fingers. The Model 1 also ran hot to the touch, and at $1900+ it could easily burn a hole in your wallet. Good things often come in small packages, but not this time.
