O Crime do Padre Amaro (The Crime of Father Amaro) is novel by 19th-century Portuguese writer José Maria Eça de Queiroz. It was first published in 1875 to great controversy.

The novel tells the story of a young priest, Amaro, who was educated to be a priest, after arriving in his new parrish in Leiria. The novel it´s critical of the 19 th century portuguese clergy.

Two film versions were already made. The first, directed by Carlos Carrera due criticism from some, for replacing Portugal 19 th century by modern México, and for not showing Amaro as a priest who didn´t choose his vocation, and for exagerating his anticlericalism.

Another version, made in Portugal for TV, was blasted by the critics, for having almost nothing in common with the novel for his excessive scenes of sex and nudity. [[Carlos Coelho da Silva directed the movie O Crime do Padre Amaro in 2005, a production sponsored by SIC television channel.
