O Quatrilho is a famous 1995 Brazilian film directed by Fábio Barreto. It was adapted from José Clemente Pozenato's novel by Antônio Calmon and Leopoldo Serran. The movie was nominated for the 1996 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, but failed to win. The film stars famous telenovela actresses Patrícia Pillar and Glória Pires as well Nip/Tuck actor Bruno Campos. The original soundtrack of the film was composed by popular singer Caetano Veloso.

Plot summary

The film tells the story of two Italian immigrant couples living in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in the early 20th century: Teresa (Patrícia Pillar) & Angelo (Alexandre Paternost) and Pierina (Glória Pires) & Massimo (Bruno Campos). While fighting for survival in the new country, the unexpected love of Massimo and Teresa appears. They react against family and cultural traditions and leave to a new destiny, leaving their partners. Quatrilho is the name of a card game in which the player have to betray his partner in order to become the champion.
