Kharkiv was the biggest and most populated city of Soviet Union occupied by Nazi Germany during WWII. It was captured on October 25 1941 but the Red Army tried to liberate it several times, starting from Second Battle of Kharkiv in May of 1942. After first, unsuccessful, attempt next (successful) was done in February of 1943. The city was liberated, for some short period and then recaptured by the Nazis. Kharkiv was finally liberated in August 23 1943 as result of an offensive in the Battle of Kursk.
