Oddanchatram is located with beautiful background in the base of western ghats (tail end of Palani Hills). It Lies on the highway between Madurai-Coimbatore and Dindigul-Palani and hence it can be suitably called as junction of main cities. It is a major Town Panchayat with population about 40000. But everyday it accomplishes more than a lakh of peoples as floating population from surrounding villages. Even before independence, train facility was available in Oddanchatram. Madurai-Coimbatore, Madurai-Palakkad (Kerala) is going through Oddanchatram.
In Oddanchatram there are two Govt. Higher Secondary schools separately for boys and girls, five Govt. Primary Schools, two middle schools and about ten Matriculation schools. Regarding higher education, here there are Christian Polytechnic, I.T.I. and Christian Engg. College. There is a Teacher Training Institute also (DIET).
A Christian fellowship mission is functioning here in the service of medical field. It is located in the heart of the town. It has wide spreaded service in medical field for peoples of Oddanchatram and surrounding villages. There are three homes for orphan children's namely Goodwill children's home, Boy's home at Gandhinagar and "Kakkum Karargal" in Kurinji Nagar Oddanchatram.
The town is popular not only in Tamilnadu but also in the nearby states of Kerala, A.P. and Karnataka for its greater supply of vegetables. Large Quantity of vegetables are transported every day from here. It is famous for milk products such as Ghee, Buttermilk, etc. [www.oddanchatrammarket.com]. Most of the people are based on agriculture.Goods transportation takes by means of road and rail and it is an enhancing factor for the economy of the town. It would be more obvious to describe about Ambilikkai a village about 8 Km. from here and about the Christian fellowship society functioning here. The society is well established,one started about 35 years back under the directorship of Dr. Jacob Cherian.
It has widespread service to the rural peoples in various fields such as medical, Educational, Spiritual and Vocational (Providing Employment). It has the second best hospital in Tamilnadu for the treatment of cancer and leprosy. Many schools, colleges, Technical institutions and Engg. college in Oddanchatram are runned by the society. Considering its services, the Govt. of India has greeted by awarding "Padma Bhushan" to its Director Dr. Jacob Cherian.
The literacy of people is about 60-70%. Though the literacy is appreciable, the people around Oddanchatram are legging in getting awareness of world events since they are tightened with old traits and habits.
