Ofermod

The word Ofermod occurs in the epic story Maldon, and describes the state of mind of Beorthnoth's when he allowed the Vikings free passage. J.R.R. Tolkien had great influence over the understanding of this term, which originally was thought to mean "spirit", or that Beorthnoth had spirit, but now is thought to perhaps mean excessive spirit, as in foolhardiness.
