Ogdensburg Agreement 1940
Encyclopedia : O : OG : OGD : Ogdensburg Agreement 1940
The Ogdensburg Agreement of 1940 was a meeting that took place in Ogdensburg, New York between Canadian Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King and US President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It was held shortly after the fall of France in World War II, when it looked as though Great Britain might be next to fall.
The US feared that if Britain fell, the Nazis would gain control of the Royal Navy, and would be able to then attack the United States on its own soil. The Agreement created the Permanent Joint Board on Defence which was to oversee the defence of North America not only during the war, but after it as well.
