Ogre Battle classes
Encyclopedia : O : OG : OGR : Ogre Battle classes
Every game in the
Ogre Battle Saga features several different
classes that an individual character can become. Most of these classes are universal throughout every game in the
Ogre Battle Saga. This is rather unique, as most other game series that use a similar class or job mechanic tend to have different classes in different games, or several classes found in only one game in the series.
The classes of the Ogre Battle Saga are listed below, complete with what games they were featured in, and the differences in their functions between different games. Also, of note, [[Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen|March of the Black Queen]] and [[Ogre Battle: Legend of the Zenobia Prince|The Prince of Zenobia]] have some different variations on common classes that only appear in these two games, the variations will be noted in the “Special Notes” of the common class.
The games in the series will be designated throughout the list as follows:
Class Requirements
Every class has a few requirements that must be met before a character can become of that class. The important variables that determine class options are all of the attributes of a character (strength, agility, intelligence, vitality, dexterity, mentality) max hit points or magic points, and alignment (L for lawful, N for neutral, C for chaotic). These requirements can change between games, for instance TKoL instituted an “emblem” system where having a character do certain things in battle would earn them an emblem, and some of these emblems were required to unlock certain classes, and sometimes classes require that certain items be found first.
Basic Human Classes
Soldier
- :Appeared in: PoLC, TKoL, LUCT
The Soldier is the most basic fighting unit in any game that it appears in. It can use any weapon, has no special techniques, and has average stat growth in all areas. The soldier is not meant to be used outside the first few hours of any game, once any soldier can change class, it is recommended that they do so.
- :Special Notes:
- In LUCT, the Soldier is the basic male class only, and the Amazon is the basic female class, however in TKoL, there are male and female Soldiers, and no Amazon class.
- Soldiers in PoLC are completely different from those in any other game in the series with a totally different gameplay mechanic. In PoLC, your army is given a reserve of Soldiers, and they act as basic filler units, they look much shorter than normal units, and carry only spears which cannot be upgraded. You can have 3 Soldiers in the place of one normal unit, and the 3 Soldiers share hit points. Every time the group loses 1/3rd of its total amount of hit points, one Soldier dies, reducing their effectiveness. Every time you win a battle where Soldiers are part of the unit, the unit leader gets 2 “Soldier points” per Soldier that remains alive. Once a leader accumulates 100 Soldier points, the group of soldiers will turn into the basic unit of the leader’s gender (Fighter or Amazon). In PoLC, this is the only way to get basic human units, and at the end of a map you are awarded more Soldiers to go into your reserves (you start the game with 30 Soldiers in reserve).
Fighter
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC
Any game that doesn’t have Soldiers (with the exception of PoLC, see above) has Fighters instead, and they act as the basic male class. In the games that they appear in, they are meant to use melee weapons only, and thus act as frontline melee fighters. They have no special abilities, or unique qualities. As soon as a Fighter can change class, it is recommended that they do so.
Amazon
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC, LUCT
The Amazon is the basic female class in every game but TKoL (where Soldiers can be male and female). Like the Fighter or Soldier, they have basic stat growth and no unique abilities, save for slightly increased mobility in water in LUCT.
- :Special Notes:
- In LUCT the Amazon can be given any weapon, melee or ranged, however in the other games that they appear in, they can only be given bows, and are best situated in the back of a unit.
Ninja
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC, TKoL, LUCT
The Ninja is a class that utilizes speed and agility as its main advantage, with average strength & intelligence, and a lower defense than other melee classes. Ninjas are usually harder to hit, but take more damage when they are struck. They can also use limited attack magic, which gives them an extra strategic aspect. Ninjas usually require a few levels worth of strength, agility, and dexterity, and a neutral or chaotic alignment.
- :Special Notes:
- In PoLC they use only claws, in the Tactics games they can use any weapon and walk on water, and in the other games they attack with shuriken.
- In LUCT they can make two attacks if they have a sword in each hand.
- In TKoL they have a special ability called “Shuriken Attack” which does a small amount of damage, although at no cost and within a large range. Also in TKoL they can be male or female (the only game in the series with female ninjas). In TKoL they can also walk on water, eliminating the movement penalty and severely reducing the attack and defense penalty that is normally applied with water.
Knight
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC, TKoL, LUCT
Knights are the melee upgrade to the basic male class, specializing in the use of swords and shields, and gaining strength and hit points at the expense of intelligence and magic points. The Knight class usually requires a few levels worth of strength and hit points, and a lawful or neutral alignment. Knights are the basic frontline fighters in every game, usually a staple of any army.
- :Special Notes:
- Knights in TKoL are slightly different from those in any other game in the series; they can be either male or female (the only game in the series with female Knights) and they are allowed to use one low level Virtue spell, like Heal or Lightning Bow. Other games in the series do have Knights who can use Virtue spells, but they are of the higher-level Paladin class (which does not appear in TKoL). Also to become a Knight in TKoL, a character must have the “Knight’s Certificate” emblem, which is acquired from attacking enemies head on.
Valkyrie
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC, TKoL, LUCT
Valkyries are versatile female warriors who are primarily melee fighters, but can also do moderate damage with magic. They have an attack strength comparable to that of a Knight, but they value mobility over defense. Their weapon of choice is a spear or lance, which has a longer range than a sword. Their stat growth is fairly average across the board, but they gain more hit points at the expense of magic points. Valkryries require a couple of levels worth of strength, vitality, and intelligence, and a lawful or neutral alignment.
- :Special Notes:
- In TKoL the “Lancer” emblem is also required, which can be acquired by hitting two enemies at the same time with a spear weapon. They also boost the power of any allied male unit within 3 panels of the Valkyrie.
Fencer
- :Appeared in: PoLC
Fencers are warriors who use two-handed swords in battle. They generally have the same attack power as a Knight, but with increased agility and decreased defense. Fencers have pretty balanced stat growth, average in every category except for lower intelligence and mentality. Fencers require a couple of levels worth of strength and dexterity, and a neutral or lawful alignment.
Samurai
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ
The Samurai are sword-wielding warriors who can also use special magic attacks from the back row. Using their magic attacks also damages them in return, so they must be observed to make sure they don’t kill themselves. They gain slightly more strength than anything else, but also average agility and intelligence. Samurai require a character be at level 7, and have neutral to lawful alignment.
Berserker
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC, LUCT
Berserkers are basically chaotic versions of Knights, with a few differences. Like the Knight, they are melee upgrades to the basic male class, however they prefer an axe to a sword and shield. They tend to have a little bit more attacking power and a little less defense than a Knight. They gain a lot of hit points, strength, and vitality at the expense of magic points and intelligence. Berserkers usually require a couple of levels worth of strength and vitality and a neutral or chaotic alignment.
- :Special Notes:
- In TKoL, this class was an enemy only class, and though the class was called “Bandit” it is identical in both look and function to the Berserker from the rest of the series.
- Known as “Wild Man” in MotBQ.
Phalanx
- :Appeared in: PoLC
Phalanxes are heavily armored melee fighters who can take a ton of punishment, and dish it out as well. Their attack strength is similar to a Knight, but their defense is much higher. They use spears to attack and can hold large shields to defend themselves with. Their stat growth is similar to a Knight, but they gain less agility per level. Phalanxes require a few levels worth of strength and vitality, and an alignment that isn’t too chaotic or too lawful.
Beast Tamer
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC, TKoL, LUCT
Beast Tamers are melee fighters who specialize in making the beasts in an army fight better, any beast that fights alongside a Beast Tamer will get a boost in power. They are adept at using whips, which have a longer range than swords. They gain strength and hit points at the expense of intelligence and magic points. Beast Tamers can be used in armies without beasts as melee powerhouses, however they are rather one-dimensional and their stat growth will impair that character if they become a class that uses magic. For any army that uses a lot of beasts the Beast Tamer is a must. Beast Tamers usually require a couple of levels worth of strength and vitality, and a neutral or chaotic alignment, also they require that a character has not killed a high number of beasts. Beast Tamers also have the highest success rate when attempting to persuade any beast.
- :Special Notes:
- Known as “Beast Man” in MotBQ
Dragon Tamer / Dragoner
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC, TKoL, LUCT
These classes are melee fighters who specialize in making the dragons in an army fight better, any dragon that fights alongside one will get a boost in power. They also have a much higher chance of success when attempting to persuade dragons to join their side than any other class. Dragoners are the male version, found in MotBQ and TPoZ while Dragon Tamers are the female version found in the other three games. Their weapon of choice is a sword, usually a thrusting sword, but they can carry shields on occasion. Their stat growth is average across the board, except for gaining a little less agility per level.
- :Special Notes:
Each game has different requirements for this class:
- MotBQ requires a Beast Master to use a Stone of Dragos, before they can then become a Dragoner
- PoLC and TKoL both have Dragon Tamers as basic classes, requiring a couple levels worth of either strength, vitality, and dexterity (PoLC) or hit points and magic points (TKoL) and an alignment that is not very chaotic and not completely lawful.
- In LUCT the Dragon Tamer is an advanced class, requiring a lot of hit points, strength, and mentality.
Archer
- :Appeared in: PoLC, TKoL, LUCT
Archers are adept at using a bow to attack enemies from afar, supporting the melee characters from behind the front lines. Archers get good gains in agility, dexterity, and hit points, and they have increased mobility in water. Their defense is lower than the melee classes, and they don’t get many magic points per level. The Archer class usually requires a few levels worth of agility and dexterity, and a neutral or chaotic alignment.
- :Special Notes:
- TKoL allows male and female Archers (the only game in the series with male Archers), the male archer looks very similar to the Gunner class found in LUCT (see below).
Wizard
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC, TKoL, LUCT
The Wizard is the basic attack magic user in every game, they use their increased intelligence and mentality to deal magic damage to enemies. Wizards can equip various weapons like staves and wands, usually to increase their intelligence and/or resistances and not to attack with. Wizards are meant to be used as support characters, and can be easily killed if left unprotected. Wizards are very important to any army, in the Tactics games they can injure multiple enemies without fear of a counterattack.
- :Special Notes:
- TKoL allows male and female Wizards (the only game in the series with female Wizards), this allows for a much easier transition to Sirens (see below) later in the game.
- The advanced version of the Wizard is the Archmage/Sorcerer, however in MotBQ and TPoZ there is a class in-between known as the Mage. Mages have one hit-all magical attack instead of two one hit magic attacks.
Sorceress
- :Appeared in: PoLC, LUCT
Sorceress are basic female magic users, they use attack magic to damage enemies from afar. In the only game they appear in, they function exactly like Wizards, the male counterpart (see above).
- :Special Notes:
- It is interesting to note that MotBQ and TPoZ has only male spell casters, PoLC has equivalent basic and advanced spell casters for both genders, TKoL has basic spell casters for both genders (male and female Wizards) but only female advanced spell casters (Siren, see below), and LUCT has a basic male spell caster (Wizard), and an advanced female spell caster (Siren).
- In LUCT, the special hidden character Deneb is considered a Sorceress (although she is much more powerful than the basic class from PoLC), but no normal character can be promoted to this class.
Doll Master
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC
Doll Masters bring puppets to life and use them to fight their battles for them. Doll Masters also make golems in their unit fight better, similar to Beast and Dragon Tamers. The magic that Doll Masters use to bring the puppets to life classifies them as a magic user, and their stats reflect that. They gain more intelligence and mentality than strength, but they also gain more hit points than a wizard does. Doll Masters usually require a couple of levels worth of intelligence and mentality, and a neutral or chaotic alignment.
- :Special Notes:
- Known as “Doll Mage” in MotBQ. Doll Masters are a class in MotBQ, but they are an upgrade to the Doll Mage.
Witch
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC, TKoL, LUCT
Witches are female spell casters who cannot attack directly, but instead can use support magic to hinder the enemy or to help allies. Witches are more mobile than other spell casters, which can let them get into and out of battles quickly. Witches can equip weapons like staves or wands, but usually to increase their intelligence or resistances, not to attack with. They gain intelligence and mentality at the expense of strength and vitality. Witches require a couple of levels worth of intelligence, mentality, and dexterity, and a neutral or chaotic alignment.
- :Special Notes:
- In TKoL, the “Vixen’s Whisper” emblem is also required, which can be acquired by having any female character successfully persuade a male enemy to join the army. The character also cannot be lawful in alignment.
Exorcist
- :Appeared in: LUCT
Exorcists are mages who specialize in banishing the undead from the physical realm. Their Exorcism attack can instantly defeat an undead unit, regardless of its remaining hit points, it is also the only way to permanently defeat an undead unit. They can also use basic healing skills and basic Virtue attack spells. Exorcists gain hit points, magic points, intelligence, and mentality over the other skills. Exorcists require a few levels worth of vitality, intelligence, and mentality, and a lawful alignment.
- :Special Notes:
- In TKoL Clerics can use the Exorcism spell, making this class obsolete.
- In the other games, Clerics can use their healing spell on undead characters to damage them, and permanently destroy them.
Cleric
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC, TKoL, LUCT
The Cleric is a healer who is in charge of keeping the other troops alive through the use of healing spells. Clerics can also use refreshing spells to clear out any abnormal statuses. Clerics gain a lot of intelligence and mentality at the expense of strength and agility, they also have average hit point growth and usually slightly above average magic point growth. Clerics can equip weapons like staves or wands, but usually to increase their intelligence or resistances, not to attack with. They should never be using melee attacks, and should be kept away from battle. Clerics usually require a couple of levels worth of magic points, intelligence, and mentality, and a neutral or lawful alignment, additionally a character who wishes to become a Cleric must not have a high number of kills. Clerics may be the most important class of any army, as keeping existing units alive is much better and cheaper than recruiting new ones.
- :Special Notes:
- TKoL allows male and female Clerics (the only game in the series with male Clerics), also in this game they are allowed to use any 3 non-summon Virtue spells, including attacking spells like Lightning Bow, and Exorcism (which cannot be used by Clerics in LUCT).
- The advanced version of the Cleric is the Priest (see below), however in MotBQ and TPoZ there is a class in-between known as the Shaman. Shamans have an extra healing spell when situated in the back of a unit.
Advanced Human Classes
Advanced classes are usually upgrades of a basic class, but sometimes they are classes that have no basic equivalent. The requirements of advanced classes usually focus on having high levels of two or three stats, and a more specific alignment. Sometimes advanced classes can only be unlocked after acquiring and/or using a specific item or items.
Paladin
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC, LUCT
Paladins are holy Knights who have a better attack than basic Knights and the ability to use basic healing spells. Like the Knight, Paladins use swords and shields in battle, and usually one or more of their equipped items is holy. Paladins get an increase in hit point and strength gains, while the rest of their stats remain average. Paladins are a definite upgrade on Knights, and should be upgraded as soon as possible. Paladins require a high amount of strength and vitality, and a moderate amount of dexterity, they also require a lawful alignment.
- :Special Notes:
- In LUCT, the special character Lans Hamilton is a Paladin, and can use a variety of Virtue spells, however normal characters cannot be promoted to the Paladin class.
Freya / Muse
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC
Freyas (PoLC) and Muses (MotBQ) are the advanced version of Valkryies, with stronger melee attacks in the front row and stronger magic attacks in the back row. Like the Valkryies they also use spears to attack with. Freyas/Muses stat gains are average in every category, gaining strength, agility, and intelligence equally. They required a high amount of strength, vitality, and intelligence, and a somewhat lawful alignment.
Dragoon
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC, TKoL, LUCT
Dragoons are experienced Knights clad in golden armor who specialize in slaying dragons, in the games this translates into extra damage vs. dragons. They are primarily melee characters, but can use basic attack magic spells to deal damage from afar.
- :Special Notes:
Dragoons are different in every game:
- In MotBQ, only 3 can be acquired by persuading the 3 Dragoons that you fight in the game to join you, regular characters cannot be promoted to the Dragoon class. They are the strongest melee fighters in the game and are practically impervious to most damage. They have exceptional stat growth in all areas, and they give dragons the same boost that Dragoners do.
- In PoLC, you can promote only one character to a Dragoon by finding 3 special items: “Dragon Helm”, “Dragon Armor”, and the “Sword of Tiamat”. Being a secret class, they are super effective, having some of the best melee attacks and excellent defense. They require a character that has a high amount of strength, vitality, and dexterity, and any alignment.
- In the Tactics games any character can be promoted to the Dragoon class, they are good melee fighters, better than Knights, but not as great as they are in the other games. In TKoL they require the “Dragons Scale” emblem, acquired from killing 5 dragons.
Centurion
- :Appeared in: PoLC
Centurions are experienced warriors who are able to lead a Legion in PoLC. Leadership skills are extremely important for this class, as any character who wants to become one must have promoted ten Soldiers to Fighters or Amazons (see the “Special Notes” for the Soldier class above). Centurions are very similar to Knights in terms of battle effectiveness, perhaps slightly better, their only distinguishing characteristic is being able to lead a Legion in the game. Their stat growth is pretty average in all areas, but they gain slightly more hit points, strength, and mentality than anything else. In addition to the Soldier promotion requirement, they also require a couple of levels worth of vitality, intelligence, mentality, and dexterity, but they can have any alignment.
- :Special Notes:
- Although there is no Centurion class in TKoL, there is a Centurion emblem, awarded to any character who is the only character in a battle to kill opponents (the other characters can damage opponents, just not actually kill them). This emblem results in a +20 bonus to the strength stat of the character who received it.
Ninja Master
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC
Ninja Masters are the advanced version of Ninjas, they get an extra attack and their ninja magic is stronger, and hits more enemies. They use either shuriken (MotBQ) or claws (PoLC) to fight in the front, and they use their ninja magic, called Ninjitsu or Ninja Art, in the back. They get high gains in agility and dexterity, and average gains in every other stat. Ninja Masters require a high amount of agility, and moderately high amounts of intelligence and dexterity, they also require a chaotic alignment.
Sword Master
- :Appeared in: PoLC, TKoL, LUCT
Sword Masters are adept at going into battle using only swords. Sword Masters can defend with a sword just as well as they can attack with one, parrying blows better than some fighters can use a shield. They also use support magic spells to hinder (but not damage) enemies, or to boost an ally’s stats. They usually gain strength, agility, and dexterity at higher levels than the other stats. They require a high amount of strength, agility, and dexterity.
- :Special Notes:
Sword Masters have slight differences in every game:
- In PoLC, they are advanced versions of Fencers, a class that is exclusive to that game, they also can use an attack called “Sonic Boom” that damages opponents, and the Sword Master in return, this attack is very similar to the Samurai attack “Iainuki” from MotBQ. Also in this game they require a neutral or lawful alignment.
- In TKoL they can use a special attack called “Pelting Fury” where they launch an energy blast at an enemy, this attack along with their reliance on strength and agility makes it seem that they are meant to be TKoL’s advanced Ninja, but that is speculative. Also in TKoL they gain extra abilities when equipped with a Katana, making this their preferred weapon. They also require the “Book of Initiation” emblem, which can be acquired by guarding three enemy attacks in a row, also they have no alignment requirement in this game.
- In LUCT, if given a one handed sword in each hand, they can attack twice, and they require a lawful alignment.
Samurai Master
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ
Samurai Masters are advanced versions of Samurai. They get one extra attack when in the front row, but are otherwise very similar to the Samurai class. Their stat growth is exactly the same as the Samurai, with higher gains in hit points and strength, and average gains in intelligence and agility. They require a character to be at level 15, and have a lawful alignment.
Black Knight / Terror Knight / Evil One
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC, LUCT
Black Knights (PoLC), Terror Knights (LUCT), and Evil Ones (MotBQ) have different names, but are all the advanced version of the Berserker (“Wild Man” in MotBQ). This class relies on strength and vitality more than anything, while having lower than average intelligence and dexterity. Their weapon of choice is a big beefy axe (that actually looks like a scythe), which they can use to cause massive damage, especially later in the game after getting huge gains in strength each level. This class requires a high amount of strength and vitality, and a very chaotic alignment.
- :Special Notes:
- In PoLC, a unique item “Valiant Mantle” is needed to make a Black Knight, an item that must be found and cannot be bought.
- In LUCT, Terror Knights reduce the fighting ability of any units around them.
Cataphract
- :Appeared in: PoLC
Cataphracts are advanced Phalanxes, and they can take even more punishment than their basic class. Cataphracts use full body heavy armor and large shields to defend themselves from blows, while using spears to attack. They aren’t offensive powerhouses, but they can take a lot of punishment for the other characters in their unit. They gain hit points, strength, and vitality more than the other stats. Cataphracts require a high amount of strength and vitality, and an alignment that isn’t too lawful or too chaotic.
Beast Master
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC, LUCT
Beast Masters are the advanced version of the Beast Tamer, sharing the attribute of increasing beast’s power in battle, but with more focus on their own melee attacking. Beast Masters use a whip, just like their basic version. They gain more strength per level than the Beast Tamers, but are otherwise the same. Beast Masters require a high amount of strength and vitality, and a neutral or chaotic alignment.
- :Special Notes:
- In LUCT, the special character Ganb is a Beast Master, but no normal character can be promoted to this class.
- In PoLC they get the same number of melee attacks in every row, making them easier to keep out of harms way without sacrificing attacks.
Dragon Master
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC
Dragon Masters are advanced Dragon Tamers/Dragoners, they are male in MotBQ and TPoZ, and female in PoLC. The Dragon Master gets better at controlling dragons, and at their melee fighting. They gain hit points and strength above all other attributes. Dragon Masters require a high amount of strength, vitality, and dexterity, and an alignment that is neutral or lawful.
- :Special Notes:
- In MotBQ they get a magic attack when placed in the back row.
- In PoLC they get the same number of melee attacks in every row, making them easier to keep out of harms way without sacrificing attacks.
Diana
- :Appeared in: PoLC
Dianas are advanced Archers who gain an extra bow attack along with enhanced defense. Dianas stat gains are pretty average all across the board, with a slight upgrade in dexterity per level. They require a high amount of strength and dexterity, and an alignment that isn’t totally chaotic or totally lawful.
Gunner
- :Appeared in: LUCT
Gunners are male ranged fighters who utilize firearms in battle. They are similar to Archers except that they cannot shoot over other characters and obstacles while Archers can, however they make up for this with an infinite range. Gunners do not utilize magic in any way, and therefore have very low magic defense. Gunners get high gains in hit points, agility, and dexterity, and gain zero magic points and below average strength. They require a high amount of strength, agility, and dexterity, and a neutral alignment.
- :Special Notes:
- Although they only appear in LUCT, TKoL features male Archers that look very similar to the Gunners of LUCT.
Archmage / Sorcerer
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC
Archmages (PoLC) and Sorcerers (MotBQ) are the advanced Wizard, and it really shows in their increased magical attacks that can hit more than one enemy. They still rely on intelligence and mentality to fuel their magic attacks, but now even more so. Like with other spell casters, their equipped weapons are not used for melee attacks, but rather to increase their intelligence or to add magic resistance. Archmages and Sorcerers are huge upgrades from the Wizards, as their ability to hit multiple enemies is invaluable. They require a high amount of intelligence and mentality, and a chaotic alignment.
- :Special Notes:
- In MotBQ, characters need an “Undead Staff” to become a Sorcerer
Siren
- :Appeared in: PoLC, TKoL, LUCT
Sirens are high-level female spell casters, and in PoLC are the advanced version of the Sorceress (and as such they are the same as the Archmage in this game). They use devastating attack spells that can hit more than one character at a time. Sirens gain intelligence, mentality, and magic points at a high rate at the expense of strength and agility. Sirens require a high amount of intelligence and mentality and a chaotic alignment.
- :Special Notes:
- In the Tactics games, the basic spell caster is the male Wizard (except in TKoL where females can be Wizards as well) and the advanced spell caster is the female Siren. Being an advanced class, the Siren has better intelligence and mentality gains than Wizards, and are better spell casters later in the game(s).
- In TkoL the “Philosophers Stone” emblem is required, which can be acquired by killing two or more enemies with one area effect spell.
Enchanter
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC
Enchanters are the advanced version of the Doll Master with a stronger doll attack (and an extra one in PoLC). They are otherwise they are very similar to Doll Masters, still enhancing the power of golems in their unit. Enchanters get pretty average stat gains across the board, gaining slightly less strength and agility per level. Enchanters require a high amount of intelligence, mentality, and dexterity, and an alignment that isn’t too chaotic or too lawful.
- :Special Notes:
- In MotBQ, Enchanters are called Doll Masters, and their basic class is called Doll Mage
Warlock
- :Appeared in: TKoL, LUCT
Warlocks are like an advanced male Witch, they utilize support spells to hinder enemies and help allies. They require a high level of magic points, intelligence, and strength (in TKoL) or mentality (in LUCT) and a neutral or lawful alignment.
- :Special Notes:
Warlocks are quite different in the two games they appear in:
- In TKoL they can hold their own in melee combat, making them similar to a Sword Master, but able to use two support spells (instead of one) and with quite a bit less attacking power. They actually get a special melee attack called “Barren Soul” that does elemental damage that is opposite of the victim’s element. They gain strength, agility, and intelligence equally per level. They also require “The Pen and the Sword” emblem, which can be acquired by killing four enemies with a melee attack, and killing four enemies with a magic attack (this need not be all at once or even during the same battle).
- In LUCT they can use dragon magic in addition to support magic, but they are not meant to do any melee fighting. They also increase the effectiveness of golems in battle (taking the place of Doll Masters and Enchanters), and they gain intelligence, mentality, and magic points more than anything else.
Priest
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC, TKoL, LUCT
Priests are the advanced Cleric, and advanced is an understatement. Priests can heal multiple allies at a time, and can even resurrect a fallen ally. They are definite upgrades over Clerics, and any Clerics should upgrade to Priests as soon as possible. Like Clerics, Priests can equip weapons, but not to use for melee fighting, rather to increase their intelligence or magic resistances. Priests gain magic points, intelligence, and mentality over the other stats. Priests require a high amount of magic points, intelligence, and mentality, and a lawful alignment.
- :Special Notes:
- TKoL allows for male and female Priests (the only game in the series with male Priests), and also the “Heavenly Spirit” emblem is required, which can be acquired by using heal magic 20 times.
- Known as “Monk” in MotBQ.
Princess
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC, LUCT
Princesses are special secret classes that can only be unlocked after finding special items. Not only do they have a better magic attack than a high level spell caster, but any unit that they are a leader of gives every character in that unit an extra attack per turn, making them one of the best classes in the entire series. Their primary attribute is intelligence, and they gain more intelligence than anything else. Princesses don’t have a stat requirement, but its probably best to promote a character with high intelligence, they do require a lawful alignment however. The special items that need to be gathered are the “Royal Crown” in MotBQ, and a “Pure White Dress”, a “Dream Tiara”, and a “Battle Fan” in PoLC.
- :Special Notes:
- In LUCT, the special character Kachua can become a Princess. Since the Tactics games don’t use number of attacks, the abilities are a bit different, she is just a high-level spell caster who can cast any spell in the game and has excellent stat growth in all areas (focusing on intelligence and mentality).
Transmigration Classes
These unique classes require that a character undergoes some sort of change, either with the use of an item, or by being killed in battle. A class that requires that a character be killed in battle also requires that character to have certain stats and/or an item be equipped; also note that these classes are not considered undead classes, as they cannot be defeated using exorcism spells.
Angel Knight
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC, TKoL, LUCT
Angel Knights are holy warriors who have been chosen to return to earth (and battle) with holy powers. They are primarily melee attackers, but can use some Virtue spells and special holy skills as well. Their weapon of choice is a “Needle of Light”, a holy thrusting sword found throughout the series. To become an Angel Knight, a character must meet strict statistic requirements (different for every game), and have a lawful alignment, they must then be killed in battle (not in training), and even then a transmigration is not guaranteed.
- :Special Notes:
- In the Tactics games they have excellent stat growth, while in PoLC their stat growth is only average.
- TKoL features male and female Angel Knights (the only game in the series with male Angel Knights).
- In MotBQ there is a class called “Angel” which is similar, but not exactly the same, the main difference is that they are a separate class that joins the army on their own, not a resurrected character. They are not as powerful as the other Angel Knights in the series, but their upgraded classes can become very powerful. The advanced version of the Angel Knight is the Seraph/Seraphim, but in MotBQ there was a class in-between called Cherubim.
Seraph / Seraphim
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC
Seraph (PoLC) and Seraphim (MotBQ) are the advanced version of Angel Knights. They do feature a better melee attack, but their real power lies in their Virtue magic called “Jihad”, which hits all enemies with holy magic, and will destroy undead units. Seraph/Seraphim requires a character that is already an Angel Knight, and that has high levels of intelligence, mentality, and dexterity, and a lawful alignment.
Lich
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC, TKoL, LUCT
Liches are spell casters who have used the “Ring of the Dead” to keep their bodies alive and augment their magical powers. Liches are arguably the best spell casters in the entire series of games. In each game in the series, the number of Liches that can be created is limited by the number of Rings of the Dead (sometimes called “Undead Ring”) that can be found, there is always a finite number, usually no more than 2 or 3 in a game. Liches deal a ton of magic damage, but they also have naturally high defenses, and can take a lot of punishment, avoiding the usual fragility of spell casters. To become a Lich, a character must have a high amount of intelligence, mentality, and magic points, and a chaotic alignment. In the Tactics games the character needs to die while having the Ring of the Dead equipped, while in MotBQ and PoLC they can transform after acquiring the ring, without having to die in battle.
Vampyre / Vampire
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC
Vampires are fighters who have undergone transformation through the use of an item (or two, in PoLC). Vampires sleep in their coffins during the day, where they are practically invulnerable, but have limited attack. During the night, however, they can suck the life from enemy units, damaging the enemy while healing themselves at the same time.
- :Special Notes:
Vampires are slightly different in the games that they appear in:
- In MotBQ, a Knight or Evil One can be transformed into a Vampyre through the use of the "Blood Curse" item. They can suck life in front or charm the enemy into fighting for you in the back. Their stat growth is decent, and their defense is excellent, making them good front row fighters (where they will heal themselves).
- In PoLC, a male character can transform into a Vampire by using two items, the "Count's Garment" and the "Bloody Emblem", neither of which can be bought. They are less effective in PoLC since the unit they are in cannot move at all during the day, and their attack and defense isn't nearly as powerful. They require a couple of levels worth of vitality, mentality, and agility, and a neutral or chaotic alignment.
Werewolf
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC
Werewolves are male fighters who have been infected with the item "Werewolf Virus" and have transformed into a Werewolf. During the day, Werewolves fight as a normal Fighters, but during the night Werewolves are among the best melee fighters in the game. They get 3 attacks in either row, and have high defense in all areas except White magic.
- :Special Notes:
- In PoLC only one character, Biske La Varet, is capable of being a Werewolf. His name is derived from Bisclaveret ("The Werewolf"), a short story written by Marie de France in the 12th century.
- In MotBQ a similar class, known as the 'Tiger Man' was available in specific areas using an item known as the 'Full Moon Stone'. The Stone is found randomly from defeated enemy units. The Tiger Man is of chaotic alignment, with two attacks in both rows rather than the Werewolf's three, however with slightly higher attack. Due to this, the classes are basically interchangable, depending on fighting style.
Demi-Human Classes
These classes include humanoid type characters who have limited or no options when it comes to changing class. These classes must be persuaded to join you and/or recruited. They typically do one thing well, unlike human characters who can change classes to fit a situation.
Hawkman
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC, TKoL, LUCT
Easily the most well known Demi-Human class, the Hawkman is a very versitile warrior. Their ability to fly gives them increased mobility, while not sacraficing any melee power. Hawkmen are good melee fighters that like to use hammers in battle, they have lower defense than a Knight, but higher agility. Their stat growth is pretty good, typically gaining a little more agility than strength.
- :Special Notes:
- In TKoL, Hawkmen can use a special ability called "Thunder Arrow" that is sort of like a lightning bullet. This attack can do pretty significant damage.
Eagleman / Vultan
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC, LUCT
Eaglemen (MotBQ) and Vultans(PoLC) are both lawful alignment upgrades to the standard Hawkman. They have better melee attacks and also gain the use of lightning magic attacks. They requires a high amount of strength and agility, a moderate amount of dexterity, and a neutral or lawful alignment.
- :Special Notes:
- The popular special character Canopus from MotBQ and LUCT is an Eagleman, in LUCT he is the only one who can have this class.
Ravenman / Raven
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC
Ravenmen (MotBQ) and Ravens (PoLC) are both chaotic alignment upgrades to the standard Hawkman. They have better melee attacks and also gain the use of either a fire magic attack (in MotBQ) or a lightning magic attack (in PoLC). They require a high amount of strength and agility, and moderate amount of dexterity, and a neutral or chaotic alignment.
Faerie
- :Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC, TKoL, LUCT
Faeries are tiny flying characters who can fight and use special abilities in battle. Faeries gain a ton of agility, and can be hard for enemy characters to hit; but their attack is very weak, which usually makes them only useful for their special abilities. Their best ability is usually "Magic Missile" which does Virtue damage and can destroy undead, this ability ranges in effectiveness between each game.
- :Special Notes:
- In MotBQ, the Faerie has two upgraded classes, the Pixie and the Sylph. The Sylph is the only one who can use Magic Missile, and in MotBQ it is one of the best abilities in the game.
Mermaid
- :''Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, TKoL
Mermaids are half human female, half fish melee fighters who attack best with a Trident. They can move well in water, but otherwise aren't very fast. Their attack is rather sub-standard, as is their defense, and they get average stat growth per level.
- :Special Notes:
- In MotBQ, they get an ice magic attack in the back row, and they have an upgraded class called a "Nixie", who has better melee and a hit-all ice attack.
Pumpkinhead
- :''Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, PoLC, TKoL, LUCT
As the story goes, Pumpkinheads are the results of Deneb's (a recurring character in the series) experiments, just as it sounds, they have pumpkins for heads. They aren't meant for melee fighting, but rather to use their special abilities in battle. Their main ability is called "Pumpkin" or "Pumpkin Smash", which drops a pumpkin on an enemy, halving its hit points.
- :Special Notes:
- In MotBQ they had an upgraded class known as a "Halloween", which had an extra attack.
- TKoL is the first game to not have a Pumpkinhead as a playable character who can be added to your army. They do make a cameo appearance, working at the shop in the secret store that you can only get by acquiring Deneb in the game.
Giant
- :''Appeared in: MotBQ, TPoZ, TKoL
Giants are just big guys who can really dish out the punishment. Attacking with a club or their fists, their melee power is very strong, and their defense is as well. Giants gain a lot of strength and hit points over everything else.
- :Special Notes:
- In MotBQ they had 2 other variations, the "Fire Giant" and the "Ice Giant", each of which were a little more powerful, had weakness against the opposite element, and gained a magic attack based on their type. There was also an upgraded class known as the "Titan" who was much more powerful and had a hit-all wind attack as well.
- LUCT didn't have a Giant, but had a similar class called "Cyclops" which were one-eyed beasts, they were a little different in that they were somewhat fast (for a large unit) and had a special attack called "Toxic Breath".
