Ogygian Deluge

Encyclopedia : O : OG : OGY : Ogygian Deluge

The Ogygian Deluge (so called because it occurred at the time of Ogyges) is a flood in Greek mythology, ending Hesiod's Silver Age and succeeded by the first Bronze Age (see Ages of Man). The Hellenistic chronologies assign a date of ca. 1628 BC to the deluge (compare to this the geological date proposed for the Thera eruption of ca. 1650 BC). James Ussher in his Annals of the World dates it to 1796 BC, or Anno Mundi 2208 [link].
