Oh No Not My Baby

Encyclopedia : O : OH : OHN : Oh No Not My Baby

"Oh No Not My Baby" is the name of a song written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King. The song's lyrics describe how friends and family repeatedly warn the singer about a partner's infidelities, but the singer refuses to believe them. Unlike many songs of this nature, in the end, the singer's faith proves to be well-founded and a happy relationship ensues.

In 1964, Maxine Brown released a version of this song and achieved success with it, taking it to the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100. In the United Kingdom, a version by Manfred Mann became a hit in 1965.

Many other remakes of this song have been released to varying degrees of popularity. Such artists as Fontella Bass, Aretha Franklin, The Partridge Family, and Dusty Springfield all recorded versions, but did not chart them. Other hit versions include Rod Stewart's 1973 version, which became a minor hit in the United States and a top ten hit in the UK. That same year, Merry Clayton had a top forty R&B hit and minor Hot 100 hit with her version. In 1976, singer De Blanc had a minor R&B hit with his version. The song was revived again in 1992 when Cher released her version as a single and scored another top forty hit in the UK. In 1994, Linda Ronstadt had a minor hit on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart with her version.
