Ohn Gyaw

Encyclopedia : O : OH : OHN : Ohn Gyaw

Ohn Gyaw (b. 1932) was the foreign minister of Myanmar from 1991 until November 1998, when he was replaced in a cabinet reshuffle. His imminent removal had been rumored since 1996, when it became clear that he could not protect the international reputation of Myanmar's military government.

Before becoming foreign minister, Ohn had already been a diplomat for 30 years, serving as the head of the South-East and South Asian department, and as ambassador to Yugoslavia, Singapore, Australia, the Soviet Union and the United States at various times before the 1988 military coup. He then served as deputy foreign minister from 1988 to 1991. He is known for his sarcasm and outspokenness and now lives in the United States. He has been declared persona non grata by the Government of Myanmar despite his family still residing in the country.
