Ōita (大分市; -shi) is the capital city of Oita Prefecture on the Kyushu island of Japan.
As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 441,270 and the density of 1,222.90 persons per km². The total area is 360.84 km².
The prefecture of Oita boasts a wide array of scenery - from seaside fishing villages, to a mountain inhabited by monkeys (takasakeyama), towns renowned for onsen (geothermal hot springs), and mountain plateaus.
Historically known as Bungo.
Oita is a sister city of Austin, Texas and of Aveiro, Portugal.
