Okayama (岡山市; -shi) is the capital city of Okayama Prefecture in the Chugoku region of Japan.

As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 633,705 and the density of 1,234.62 persons per km². The total area is 513.28 km².

The city was founded on June 1, 1889.

The city is known as the site of the Korakuen Garden and the striking black Okayama Castle. The popular Japanese folktale of Momotaro may have originated there.

After the merger of March 22, 2005, Okayama is scheduled to become a designated city somewhere around in the 2000s.
