Oke

The ōke (王家), literally "Prince Houses", were branches of the Imperial Family formed from branches of the Fushimi-no-miya house. All but one of the ōke were formed by the descendants of Fushimi-no-miya Kuniye. The ōke were stripped of their membership in the Imperial Family by the Occupation Authorities in 1947.

The ōke were, in order of founding:

Unless otherwise stated, all princes listed herein are the sons of their predecessor. All ōke were officially disbanded in 1947. However, unofficial heads of these families still exist for most and are listed herein.

Nashimoto-no-miya

The Nashimoto house was formed by Prince Moriosa, son of Prince Fushimi-no-miya Sadayoshi (father of Fushimi-no-miya Kuniye)
  1. 1870-1885 Moriosa ō (1819-1885)
  2. 1885-1885 Kikumaro shinnō (1873-1908) grand-nephew of Moriosa; resigned the position to return to Yamashina
  3. 1885-1951 Morimasa ō (originally Tada ō) (1874-1851) cousin of Kikumaro and fourth son of Kuni-no-miya Asahiko; after 1947 "Nashimoto Morimasa"
  4. 1966- Nashimoto Norihiko (1922-) (previously Tatsuda Norihiko, prior to 1947, Count Tatsuda Norihiko, and before 1943 Norihiko ō

Kuni-no-miya

The Kuni house was formed by Prince Asahiko, 4th son of Prince Fushimi-no-miya Kuniye
  1. 1863-1891 Asahiko shinnō (1824-1891) - Nakagawa-no-miya 1863-1871, became shinnō in 1871
  2. 1891-1929 Kuniyoshi ō (1873-1929) - note: Father of Empress Kojun, wife of Shōwa Emperor (Hirohito)
  3. 1929-1959 Asaakira ō (1901-1959) (after 1947, Kuni Asaakira)
  4. 1959- Kuni Kuniaki (1929-)

Yamashina-no-miya

The Yamashina house was formed by Prince Akira, eldest son of Fushimi-no-miya Kuniye
  1. 1864-1898 Akira shinnō (1816-1898)
  2. 1898-1908 Kikumaro shinnō (1873-1908) (Nashimoto-no-miya in 1885, see above)
  3. 1908-1987 Takehito ō (1898-1987)

Kachō-no-miya

The Kachō or Kwachō house was formed by Prince Hirotsune, fifth son of Fushimi-no-miya Kuniye
  1. 1868-1894 Hirotsune ō (1840-1894)
  2. 1895-1905 Hiroyasu shinnō (1875-1896) - nephew; son of Fushimi-no-miya Sadanaru, and later succeeded him; probably an ō at the time he was Kwachō-no-miya
  3. 1905-1924 Hirotada (1902-1924)

Kitashirakawa-no-miya

The Kitashirakawa house was formed by Prince Toshinari, 8th son of Fushimi-no-miya Kuniye

  3. 1895-1923 Naruhisa ō (1887-1923)
  4. 1923-1940 Nagahisa ō (1910-1940)

Higashifushimi-no-miya

The Higashifushimi house was formed by Prince Yoshiaki (later Akihito), seventh son of Prince Fushimi-no-miya Kuniye
  1. 1870-1903 Akihito shinnō - changed title to Komatsu-no-miya in 1872 at same time that he changed his personal name to Akihito
  2. 1903-1922 Yorihito ō (1867-1922) - brother, reverted title to Higashifushimi

Kaya-no-miya

The Kaya house was formed by Prince Kuninori, 2nd son of Prince Kuni-no-miya Asahiko (1st Kuni-no-miya, see above)
  1. 1892-1909 Kuninori shinnō (1867-1909), originally heir to Kuni-no-miya, but excluded for reasons of health; Kaya-no-miya was merely a personal title until 1900
  2. 1909-1978 Tsunenori ō (1900-1978) (Kaya Tsunenori after 1947)
  3. 1978-1986 Kuninaga (1922-1986)
(Family is not extinct, but no recognized head)

Asaka-no-miya

The Asaka house was formed by Prince Yasuhiko, 8th son of Prince Kuni-no-miya Asahiko
  1. 1906-1981 Yasuhiko ō; (1887-1981)
  2. 1981-1994 Asaka Takahiko (1912-1994)
  3. 1994- Asaka Tomohiko (1944-)

Higashikuni-no-miya

The Higashikuni house was formed by Prince Naruhiko, ninth son of Prince Kuni-no-miya Asahiko
  1. 1906-1990 Naruhiko ō (1887-1990)
  2. 1990-present Higashikuni Nobuhiko (1944-present, eldest male line grandson of former Prince Naruhiko and a female line grandson of Emperor Showa

Takeda-no-miya

The Takeda house was formed by Prince Tsunehisa, eldest son of Prince Kitashirakawa-no-miya Yoshihisa (2nd Kitashirakawa-no-miya)
  1. 1906-1919 Tsunehisa ō (1882-1919)
  2. 1919-1992 Tsuneyoshi ō (1909-1992) Takeda Tsuneyoshi from 1947
  3. 1992- Takeda Tsunetada (1947- )
