Encyclopedia : O : OL : OLD : Old Ford Factory (Singapore)
The Old Ford Factory was established in October 1941 as Southeast Asia's first car assembly plant. It was also here on 15 February 1942 that Lt.-Gen A.E. Pervical, Commander of the British Forces in Singapore, surrendered to the Japanese Army. The following day on 16 February 1942, Singapore was renamed Syonan-To (昭南島 Shōnan-tō, "Light of the South Island" in Japanese) and that marked the beginning of the three years of Japanese Occupation
Today
Today, the building still stands as it was, albeit minor restorations that include an art deco-styled outlook and a garden plot behind the building planted with wartime crops such as tapioca and sugarcane that serves as a remembrance of the resourceful survival skills of those who lived through the harsh times.
