Old Stratford
Encyclopedia : O : OL : OLD : Old Stratford
Old Stratford is a village in the south of the English county of Northamptonshire.
It is immediately north of where the Roman road Watling Street (later, but no longer, the A5) crossed the River Great Ouse; immediately south of this crossing point is the town of Stony Stratford in Milton Keynes. Originally on the junction of the A5, the A422 and the A508, these roads now bypass the village on its northern edge. At an earlier time, the Buckingham Arm of the Grand Union Canal passed through the village: long disused, the only evident reminder of that time is that the village has a "Wharf Lane".
For most practical respects, Old Stratford is a suburb of its southern neighbour which, in turn, is increasingly regarded as a suburb of Milton Keynes. It is administered by South Northamptonshire District Council, based in Towcester.
