Erik Olof Mellberg (IPA: ['uːlɔf 'mɛlbærj]) (born September 3, 1977 in Amnehärad, Gullspång) is a Swedish football player and current captain of both Aston Villa and Sweden.
Mellberg is a strong central defender currently playing club football with Aston Villa. He has also played for Gullspång, Degerfors IF, AIK, and Racing Santander (Spain). Mellberg was a member of the Sweden in the 2002 FIFA World Cup, as well as Euro 2000, Euro 2004 and 2006 FIFA World Cup. He has scored 2 goals in 72 caps, as of July 2006.
In 2003 he was selected as best Swedish player of the year, winning the Guldbollen.
