Olympic Congress

The Olympic Congress is a vast gathering of the Olympic Movement, which happens on an irregular basis, but generally every ten years or so during the last few decades. The Congress is organized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Olympic Congresses bring together representatives of all the parties that make up the Olympic Movement, namely the IOC, the National Olympic Committees, the International Sports Federations, the Olympic Games Organising Committees, the athletes, coaches, judges and the media, as well as other participants and observers. The role of the Congress is consultative.
Thirteenth Olympic Congress (2009) - Copenhagen
International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge has announced in 2005 that the next and thirteenth Olympic Congress is scheduled in 2009. The host city was elected on February 8, 2006 in Turin, Italy. Copenhagen, Denmark was chosen as the host of the XIIIth Olympic Congress defeating Cairo, Egypt by 59 votes to 40. With this result, still no Olympic Congress has ever taken place outside of Europe.The nine original candidate cities were: Athens (Greece), Busan (South Korea), Cairo (Egypt), Copenhagen (Denmark), Lausanne (Switzerland), Mexico City (Mexico), Riga (Latvia), Taipei (Republic of China) and Singapore. But Mexico City (Mexico) dropped out of the running in January 2006, followed by Lausanne a few days before the vote.
The Vote
- First round of vote - Athens eliminated with one vote
- Second round of vote - Riga eliminated with two votes
- Third round of vote - Singapore eliminated with six votes
- Fourth round of vote - Taipei eliminated with seven votes
- Fifth round of vote - Pusan eliminated with twenty-four votes
- Sixth round of vote - Copenhagen wins over Cairo 59 - 40
