Oneonta is a city in Blount County, Alabama, United States. At the 2000 census the population was 5,576. The city is the county seat of Blount County.

Oneonta is located at 33°56'32.291" North, 86°28'43.586" West (33.942303, -86.478774)[Geographic references#1GR1].

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 39.9 km² (15.4 mi²). 39.7 km² (15.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (0.52%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 5,576 people, 2,177 households, and 1,419 families residing in the city. The population density was 140.3/km² (363.4/mi²). There were 2,373 housing units at an average density of 59.7/km² (154.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 85.87% White, 7.41% Black or African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 4.45% from other races, and 1.60% from two or more races. 13.24% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 2,177 households out of which 28.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.8% were married couples living together, 11.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.8% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.97.

In the city the population was spread out with 21.5% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 21.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $28,620, and the median income for a family was $40,125. Males had a median income of $30,430 versus $19,531 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,166. About 8.4% of families and 14.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.2% of those under age 18 and 22.7% of those age 65 or over.
