Onpu (Japanese 音符), is the Japanese word for musical notes. When used in mass communication, the characters for onpu can be converted into the symbol ♪. The exact meaning of the onpu musical note character is not well known by western observers. Its use is in actuallity shrouded in mystery. In some cases onpu can be used both in front and behind a word for emphasis. Other times, one or more onpu can be used at the end of a sentence to soften the meaning or to make the message appear more cute. Furthermore, onpu convey a certain level of positive meaning, even when used with a generally negative setenece. Onpu are often used in conjunction with other Kigou for more effect. Onpu are most often used by young Japanese females, but their use extends into other groups such as Japanese males and foreigners. First time readers of onpu should use extreme caution; as, at times, the onpu can be used to misdirect the reader by clouding a subversive meaning.
