Oolite (computer game)
Encyclopedia : O : OO : OOL : Oolite (computer game)
Oolite is a free (as in freedom), Creative Commons licensed, 3D Space Sim in the spirit of Elite, and is as the name suggests, Object Oriented [E]lite, written in Objective-C.
It was developed by Giles Williams for Mac OS X and first released in July, 2004. A GNU/Linux port released in September 2005 has since v1.52 followed the OSX developments closely. In March 2006, the Windows GNUstep version was moved out of alpha. Ports are also available for SGI IRIX as well as FreeBSD on Intel architectures.
Oolite is designed as an ‘open–hooded’ game that can easily be modified and expanded upon without any need of programming skills, just using simple tools to create an [OXP] (Oolite eXpansion Pack). These game additions, self-made or downloaded, are freely placed in an AddOns folder, letting the user shape how basic or elaborate the game universe should be.
Although Oolite has grown from its inspirational source, the gaming experience is still enhanced by the context set in Elite's original [manual], and the accompanying novella, The Dark Wheel.
