Opal (fuel)

Encyclopedia : O : OP : OPA : Opal (fuel)

Opal is a variety of gasoline (petrol) developed in 2005 by BP Australia to combat the rising use of gasoline as an inhalant in remote Indigenous Australian communities.

Typical unleaded gasoline contains 25% aromatics, whilst Opal contains only 5%.

Prior to the introduction of Opal, Comgas (Avgas rebranded) has been used in many communities to discourage misuse of fuel as an inhalant; however, unlike Opal, Comgas contains lead. Opal is subsidised by the Australian Government in remote communities.
