Opalescence

Encyclopedia : O : OP : OPA : Opalescence

Opalescence is the type of dichroism of a highly dispersed system with no or small opacity. The material appears yellowish-red in transmitted light and blue in the scattered light perpendicular to the transmitted light.

Examples are the blue sky and the yellowish-red sky in the evenings. An other example can be made in an experiment: A few droplets of milk are thinned in a glass of water: the milk looks bluish. If one looks through the milk to a light source, it looks yellowish-red.
