OpenOffice.org Writer is an open source/free software word processor which is a component of the OpenOffice.org software package.
Writer is a word processor similar to Microsoft Word, with a roughly equivalent range of features. It provides a number of features not present in Word, including being able to export to the PDF format natively.
Writer is capable of opening and saving documents in a number of various formats, including Microsoft Word's DOC, RTF, XHTML, and the OASIS Open Document Format (its default format as of version 2.0).
As with the entire OpenOffice.org suite, Writer can be used across a variety of platforms, including Mac OS X, Windows, GNU/Linux, FreeBSD and Solaris.
OpenOffice.org is free software. Anyone can make improvements then share them for everyone to enjoy. As the user and developer base of OpenOffice.org continues to grow, features and enhancements may be added to the package at a higher rate.
