Optimus Prime (Fire Convoy in Japan) is a fictional character in who leads the Autobots in a secret campaign. Hidden in plain sight on Earth as common, everyday vehicles, the Autobots are forced to emerge when Megatron and his Predacons arrive and wreak havoc in their attempts to attain the power of Earth's varied energy sources.

Optimus Prime transforms into a fire engine. The front section of the vehicle detaches and becomes Prime himself, armed with his Blaze Blaster cannons and Gryo-Strike leg wheels, while the rest of the vehicle transforms into a mobile battle station/refuelling port/communications array, and can combine with Prime as additional weapons and armor, forming his super mode (Super Fire Convoy). The ladder/hose section houses Prime's "Power Stream" water cannon, capable of shooting freezing streams of water (known as the Blizzard Storm attack in Car Robots), and also contains a quartet of rocket launchers. His super mode feet contain missile launchers than can mount to the shoulders of his regular robot mode. Prime is also holder of the sacred Matrix.

As a nod to their origins in G1, Optimus Prime and his brother Ultra Magnus (God Magnus)) were created at the same time by Alpha Trion, but when Prime was chosen to carry the Matrix, Magnus felt passed over, and was left carrying a grudge against his brother. That grudge eventually exploded into violence when he arrived on Earth with the intention of taking what he believed was rightfully his - by force, if necessary. Severely injuring Prime, who refused to fight back, Magnus tracked him to a desert island, where he pretended to offer him the hand of friendship, only to attempt to absorb the Matrix for himself, forcing the brothers into the combined form of Omega Prime (God Fire Convoy). Through this link, Magnus was also able to channel the power of the Matrix, which he used to supercharge the Autobot Brothers into newly-coloured forms. Although Magnus remained a free agent, refusing to take orders from his brother, his animosity dwindled and he frequently helped the Autobots by combining with Prime to battle the Predacons and Decepticons. As Omega Prime, they faced Galvatron together at the Earth's core and successfully defeated him once and for all.

Note that in Car Robots, there is not one singular Matrix, but multiple ones, each held by a high-ranking Autobot. God Magnus already possesses a Matrix, and simply seeks to steal the power of Fire Convoy's to increase his own (the overspill resulting in the supercharging of the Autobot Brothers).

Optimus Prime is voiced by Neil Kaplan in the English version of Robots in Disguise and Satoshi Hashimoto in the Japanese Car Robots version.

Dreamwave Comics

Robots in Disguise's Optimus Prime made one appearance in Dreamwave Comics' Summer Special issue before the company went under. There was a contest in the issue as to whether Robots in Disguise or Beast Wars would be the next Dreamwave comic series. Beast Wars won.

A yellow repaint RiD Optimus Prime was released for the Transformers: Universe line. This toy was a Sams Club store exclusive. Alongside a repaint of Ultra Magnus, these characters had no tech specs until they appeared in Transformers Collectors Club comics, where it was revealed they were the same Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus from the RiD continuity, who were taken to the Transformers: Universe reality.

RiD Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus were repainted again and sold as a set exclusive to Costco stores in the Transformers: Cybertron line in 2005.

Issue #7 (Revelations Part 1) - As Nemesis Prime unleashes the Dead Matrix, Vector Prime and Ramjet do battle above Iacon. Vector Prime attempts to finish off Ramjet with his Cyber Key Power. In the spark core Nemesis Prime is attacked by Omega Prime, who appears seemingly out of nowhere. Omega Prime then splits into Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus. As Optimus tries to save the spark of Primus, Magnus takes on Nemesis Prime. Ramjet lays in pieces, but cannot die. Vector Prime opens a portal to another dimension to imprison Ramjet. Although Skyfall tries to save Ramjet, Vector Prime is able to use his Cyber Key Power again to overcome Skyfall's force field. Back in the Spark Core Optimus uses his Matrix to heal the spark of Primus as Ultra Magnus knocks out Nemesis Prime. Sentinel Maximus gets to the spark core in time for to see Optimus say they need to talk.

Issue #8 (Revelations Part 2) - Vector Prime returns to Alpha Trion's chamber carrying Skyfall, with both needing repairs. As Vector Prime is telling Downshift what happened, Sentinel Maximus, Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus return and inform them that Nemesis Prime is in stasis lock and was placed in an energy dampening cell. Optimus Prime tells the story of where they came from (The Transformers: Universe comic). Vector Prime is unable to maintain his form and begs Sentinel Maximus to protect Skyfall, thinking he came to Cybertron for a reason. Vector Prime then vanishes. A voice speaks from nowhere that explains that Vector Prime and Safeguard are now on Earth (where he continues in the television series). The voice is the Mini-Con Over-Run, whose body was killed by Starscream, but he now lives in Cybertron's computer system. Over-Run was the one who activated the autoguns that defeated Scorponok and the one who brought Omega Prime to Cybertron. Over-Run has Optimus and Magnus store the Dead Matrix in the rare items locker at the Cybertron archives, but they are observed by Soundwave.

In the comic story found in issue 8 of the Transformers Collectors Club magazine Cybertron/Robots in Disguise Optimus Prime told the story of the last battle he was in, set in the Transformers: Universe storyline. Alongside 10th Anniversary Optimus Primal they attacked the last of Unicron's forces when Unicron suddenly disappeared, and they barely escaped. Among the Autobot forces were Universe Fireflight, King Atlas, Universe Night Slash Cheetor, Universe Longhorn, Universe Prowl, Universe Repugnus, Rhinox, Universe Side Burn, Sideswipe, Universe Silverbolt, Sunstreaker, Tap-Out, Trailbreaker, Cybertron/Robots in Disguise Ultra Magnus and Universe Whirl. Among the Decepticons were Universe Blackaracknia, Nemesis Strika, Universe Obsidian, Universe Razorclaw, Reptilion and Universe Skywarp.
