Orang-Bati

Covered with acres of unexplored rainforest, the little known Indonesian island of Seram - the second largest island in the Moluccas group - is said to be the home of a bizarre winged primate known as the Orang-Bati.

According to folklore from the island of Seram in Indonesia, weird human/bat creatures are often seen flying about at night and abducting small children. They return every morning to an extinct volcano, where they presumably devour the children. The Orangi-Bati itself translates from the indigenous language of the Moluccan's as "men with wings". It is said to have leathery Bat-like wings, blood-red skin, the looks of a human, grotesque anomaly sprouting from each shoulder, a long thin tail, and be about 1.5m (5ft) tall. Aboriginals have further claimed that these animals emit a long "mournful wail".

It is also said to ostensibly resemble winged monkeys, the Ropen, the Kongomato, and possibly even the North American Batsquatch.

Explanation?

Many cryptozoologists think that the Orangi-Bati could be an evolutionary missing link between humans and a hitherto undiscovered species, others link them with Mothman, angels, even aliens. There is also the theory that it might be a monkey-eating bat, like the monkey-eating Philippine Eagles that are some of the world's largest flying birds. Since Seram has no monkeys, it is thought that the orang-bati mistakenly preys on young children instead, but that it finds plenty of monkeys elsewhere so that it doesn't kill humans in other places.
