Although the Impignoration of 1468 (when Orkney was pawned to James III of Scotland by Christian I of Denmark and Norway for his daughter’s dowry) and the subsequent annexation of the islands by Scotland in 1472 took place over five centuries ago, Orcadians generally regard themselves as Orcadian more than Scots [link].
Both Orkney and Shetland retain distinct elements of Udal Law, despite the gradual imposition of Scots Law over this period.
When an Orcadian speaks of Scotland, they usually talking about the land to the immediate south of the Pentland Firth[[Citing sources citation needed]]. When an Orcadian speaks of “the mainland”, they normally mean The Mainland, Orkney.
