Encyclopedia : O : OR : ORC : Orchard Beach, New York
Orchard Beach is a public beach in the borough of The Bronx, in the City of New York. It is located in Pelham Bay Park on Long Island Sound.
The beach was created by Robert Moses by filling in approximately one third of Pelham Bay with landfill. It took a total of 1.2 million cubic yards of sand, brought by barge from Sandy Hook in New Jersey and the Rockaways in Queens to build Orchard Beach. The landfill was put between Rodman's Neck, Twin Island and Hunters Island; the latter two are no longer islands, but are now connected to the mainland Bronx by the landfill.
Orchard Beach is also the home of Hoops In The Sun, Inc., an annual summer basketball league that takes place at Section 6 of the beach during the summer months of June through August. It has been the home of Hoops In The Sun, Inc. since its inception in 2000.
