Orkanger

Orkanger is a small town in the municipality of Orkdal, Norway, located at the tip of Orkdalsfjorden. Combined with Fannrem it constitutes the biggest town of Sør-Trøndelag county outside of Trondheim, the county capital. Orkanger is Orkdal's political and commercial centre.

The surrounding area used to be a separate municipality, which was separated from Orkdal on July 1, 1920 but reunited January 1, 1963.

"Orkanger" is comprised of the name "Ork", stemming from Orkelsjøen (Orkel lake) from which the river Orkla runs, and "anger" of the Old Norse meaning "narrow (fjord)".
