Orlando Furioso (Vivaldi)

Encyclopedia : O : OR : ORL : Orlando Furioso (Vivaldi)

Orlando furioso is an opera in three acts by Antonio Vivaldi to an Italian libretto by Grazio Braccioli, based on the poem of the same name by Ariosto. First performance: Teatro Sant'Angelo, Venice, 1727.

The opera has set numbers with recitative, and is set on an island at an unspecified time.

Orlando furioso is not part of the standard operatic repertory. There is a new recording of it, with a very fine performance of the title role by the young Canadian contralto, Marie-Nicole Lemieux. There have been several recent performances by the same forces as the recording.
