History

Orlando Sanford International Airport shares a similarity with one of its newest destinations at Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield because both Airports are ex-Military airfields made over for commercial use. The airport was formerly Sanford NAS (Naval Air Station) and was home to North American RA-5C Vigilante aircraft during the Viet Nam War. Congress closed the Naval Air Station in 1968. A commemorative memorial, plaque and a scale size RA-5C Gate Guardian is positioned on the entrance road within the Airport perimeter in memory to service personnel who served their country during the conflict.

Facilities

Orlando Sanford International Airport covers 2,010 acres and has four runways: The dominant runway is 9L/27R, however parallel runways 9C/27C and 9R/27L are also used for light aircraft. The airport also has available runways 36 and 18 for rare northerly fronts in the winter, this runway is not used for normal commercial traffic.
