Oroya fever

Oroya fever is a form of Carrion's disease, caused by bartonella bacilliformis. It is a biphasic disease limited to certain regions of the Andes mountains and is viewed as a medical curiosity. The acute stage of the disease is characterized by a severe, life-threatening hemolytic anemia. It is named after the city of La Oroya in the Peruvian Andes mountains.
