The southern mud oyster or native flat oyster (Ostrea angasi) is endemic to southern Australia, ranging from Western Australia to south east NSW and around Tasmania.

Habitat

Sheltered silt, sand bottomed estuaries; 1 - 30 m depth.

Diet

Flat oysters, like all other oyster species are filter feeders. Feeding on, and taking in anything small enough to filtered in their gills! This may include plankton, micro-algae or inorganic material.

General

Nowadays the oyster industry in southern Australia has started farming Ostrea angasi, after supplies of wild caught individuals were exausted due to over-fishing.
