Ōta (Japanese: 太田市; -shi) is a city located 50 miles northwest of Tokyo, in Eastern Gunma, Japan. This city is located between Tone and Watarase rivers. On March 28th, 2005, Nitta Town, Ojima Town, and Yabuzukahon Town were annexed by Ota City. As a result, new city reached a total population of 217,038, making it 3rd-largest city in Gunma.
Ota's leading industry is manufacturing. There is a major manufactuing center in the southeast of the city, as well as neighboring towns of Oizumi and Chiyoda. This city is #1 in the prefecture in Manufacturing revenue. It is the home of the car manufacturer Subaru, a subsidiary of Fuji Heavy Industries, Ltd. Also, Ota is a major transportation hub in Tomo (means Eastern Gunma) region.
The city was founded on May 31, 1948. Mayor is Masayoshi Shimizu.
Ota is also known for one of the largest selections of hostess clubs in Japan. Many of those flock in the south of Ota Station, in downtown area.
Places of Interest
- Daikoin Temple - Founded in 1618. Popular with nickname Kosodate Donryu (meaning kid-raising Saint Donryu). Located 1.5 mi northwest of the downtown.
- Kanayama Castle - A Kamakura-era castle on the top of Mt. Kanayama (800 ft). Located 2 mi north of the downtown.
- Tenjin'yama Kofun - A large ancient (around 5th century) burial mound.
- Yabuzuka Onsen - Ota's hot springs. Originally it was Yabuzukahoncho Town area annexed by Ota. 6 mi northwest of the downtown.
- Snake Center - Located in Yabuzuka Onsen area. Famous for collection of rare kinds of snakes.
Transportation
- Ota Station - One of Tobu Railway's hub. Isesaki, Kiryu, and Koizumi lines meet at this station. Express Ryomo stops. These following is approximate time by train from Ota:

- *Kiryu, Gunma: 20 min
- *Ashikaga, Tochigi: 10 min

- Bus - covers throughout the city and vicinity, such as Kumagaya, Saitama

- *Rt. 407 - connected to Higashimatsuyama, Kumagaya, and ends in Ashikaga.
