Ottavio Quattrocchi
Encyclopedia : O : OT : OTT : Ottavio Quattrocchi
Ottavio Quattrocchi was born in Mascali, Catania, Sicily. While serving as Director of [Eni], he was accused of involvement in the Bofors Scandal, the 1980s bribery scandal involving the Swedish arms manufacturer Bofors and prominent Indian politicians, which contributed to the defeat of the Congress Party in the 1989 elections. It is claimed that Quattrocchi received 3% of the money paid by Bofors for the contract to sell howitzers to the Indian Army as a broker's fee.
He arrived in India in the early 80's as the representative of Snamprogetti and quickly established himself as a key player in New Delhi given his close ties to the Gandhi family. He left India for Malaysia in 1993 when the BJP started to use the allegations as political ammunition gainst the reigning Congress Party. Interpol issued an arrest warrant and the Indian government tried to have him extradited from Malaysia. That effort did not succeed and in 2003 Quattrocchi returned to Italy.
Based on a court appeal by Quattrocchi, British authorities unfroze his personal accounts held in the UK.
