is the title of a fictional Japanese series created by Japanese author Bisco Hatori centering around a group of high school friends all in the same club - the Host Club.
The series first started as a manga serialized in LaLa on August 5 2003. Currently, the manga is unfinished with eight complete volumes already released. Later, Ouran was adapted into a 26-episode anime television series produced by BONES, which premiered on April 4 2006 in Japan.

Plot

Ouran High School Host Club is a story involving a wide range of characters, which takes place primarily at Ouran High School where they all attend. The school is an exclusive institution reserved only for students from wealthy and affluent families. One exception, however, is scholarship student Haruhi Fujioka, a young girl from a lower-middle class family who tends to have a low threshold for gender identity. Upon entering school, she at first disguises herself as a male student since she thought it'd be easier this way with not many people bothering her, or so she had hoped. One day, she begins to search through the vast campus for a quiet place to study since it seems all the libraries are filled with gossiping students. Her search takes her to the technically unused third music room where she stumbles upon the Host Club - a group of six attractive male students who spend their time charming and entertaining the school's girls for profit. During their first meeting, Haruhi is shocked at their behavior which causes her to inadvertently knock over a very expensive vase valued at ¥8,000,000. This causes Haruhi to contract a massive debt with the Host Club and at first she is employed as the club's "dog" and is constantly ordered to do menial tasks for the members, such as serving food or cleaning up.

Eventually, Haruhi is promoted to be one of the hosts of the club as a way to pay off her debt, though even after all the members of the club discover that Haruhi is in fact female, she is kept as one of the hosts because of her natural talent as one of the hosts.

Haruhi is a lower-middle class first-year student who wins her attendance in Ouran High School through academic merit. Haruhi accidentally breaks a vase worth ¥8,000,000 ($80,000 in the manga's North American English version) from the host club, and since then she has been forced to work for them to pay for it. Without knowing she was actually a girl, they convince her to work as a host too, and she soon discovers she has a talent for the job as her "sensitive and girly boy" style quickly earns her some female admirers, to the point that the host club members decide to let her continue even after they figure out the truth. Her label is the 'natural' type. She has a weakness for (and so is occasionally bribed with) expensive food such as ootoro (a type of tuna sushi), as to her, they are a luxury. She likes tasty food in general, but gets especially excited over seafood. It also seems that the reason she's been studying so hard up to this point, including being able to attend Ouran Academy, is because she wants to follow in her mother's footsteps and become a lawyer.
Tamaki Suoh

Tamaki Suoh

Tamaki is a Ouran High School second-year student, and president of the host club (often referred to as Father, King, or Lord by other members.) Tamaki is by far the most popular one, as he is designated by around 70% of the club's customers. Despite that, Haruhi considers him annoying. He was the last of the boys to figure out that she is a girl. He has both a fatherly and romantic affection for Haruhi, wanting her to act more feminine and trying to get her to wear a skirt, and also constantly blushing when she unknowingly compliments him. He even calls Kyoya 'Mom' while he is the 'Daddy'. He's half-Japanese and half-French. Aware of others' problems and having the urge to help them, he often makes plans or "strategies" to fix their problems. His family is involved with business mostly, but is also involved with the school administration. In fact, he's the son of the superintendent. In other words, his family is financially supporting Haruhi as a special student.

Kyoya is a second-year student at Ouran High School, and vice-president of the host club (often referred to as "Mother" by other members). Very smart and calculating, he attracts customers with his "calm and cool" demeanor. His family seems to supply the school's medical staff and security (via its 100-member private police force). Although Tamaki is the official leader of the club, Kyoya can easily manipulate him to do what he wants and the other hosts would follow his lead rather than Tamaki's.

He keeps track of various information about the students at Ouran Academy and is even in contact with Haruhi's father, who told him about Haruhi's popularity with boys in middle school and even gave him some of her pictures. He's very crafty in managing money. During some of the Ouran Host Club's escapades, he'll usually go along with the more eccentric character's antics because it could be 'interesting'. He not only provides Host Club merchandise for the customers, but also keeps Haruhi in debt by finding ways to add to it and using money from her auctioned belongings and pictures to pay for various things.

Hikaru and Kaoru are first-year students. Identical twins with a malicious stare, Hikaru (the older one who parts his hair to the right) and Kaoru (who parts his hair to the left) tend to insinuate they have an incestuous relationship to appease their "boys love" fan customers (as well as catering for those fond of the "little devil" types), though they are now very fond of Haruhi, who is also their classmate. Still, they often rub this fact in Tamaki's face and flirt with Haruhi just to provoke him to participate in their games. Their mother specializes in clothing design and there are a few instances where they try to wheedle Haruhi into one of the swimsuits she designed only to be stopped by Tamaki with a yellow parka.

Hunny was once described by the author as "So cute that it's almost a crime". He is the Host Club's "Loli-shōta" host. Despite the fact that he looks like a child and always carries a stuffed toy bunny named "Bun-Bun" with him, Hunny is a third-year (equivalent to a senior in the USA) in Ouran High School and the club's oldest member. His customers love his "cute little boy" behavior.

He gives everyone nicknames like Haru-chan for Haruhi and Tama-chan for Tamaki. The only exception is Mori, who Hunny calls by his real name, Takashi. As cute and defenseless as Hunny looks, he is a champion martial artist. Kyoya's private police force respects him because his family has contributed greatly to the dojos that they are from.

In light of Hunny's martial arts prowess, some (rather fantastic) rumors have been spread about him amoungst the members of the host club (The twins and Tamaki in particular). One such story involves an alleged international incident between Japan and America which occurred as a result of Hunny being woken up too early by a soldier on a training holiday, causing a "Bunny swell phenomenon" (A Rabbit version of the "Seven Swell Phenomenon"; see Eureka Seven for more details), wiping out two US Green Beret platoons instantly as a result. Humourously, Haruhi dismissed this as rubbish only to believe it when it's revealed that Hunny's bloodtype is AB, the same as Kyoya. (In the anime, Haruhi breaks the fourth wall to apologize to any of the show's AB type viewers.)

Also worth mentioning, Hunny's character, personality, and even appearance and hobbies bear an extremely striking resemblance to the Fruits Basket character Momiji Sohma. Whether or not Bisco Hatori was influenced by Natsuki Takaya is not known at this time, but it should be noted that the two are similar in almost every way: Both are blond, have chocolate colored eyes, are older than they look, and possess bunny and candy fetishes. Perhaps because of their similarities, it turns out the same seiyū who did Momiji Sohma, Ayaka Saito, was also cast for Hunny's voice.

Hunny's cousin, and also a third-year, Mori is the tallest and strongest member of the club. Despite the fact that he rarely speaks or smiles, his tall, tanned, and handsome figure earns him many customers. According to Kyoya, "His taciturnity is his selling point". Oddly enough, he's labeled the "wild" host. Mori is a champion at kendo.

Supporting characters

Renge Houshakuji
Renge Houshakuji

The Host Club's (self-proclaimed) manageress (for a while, at least). Was once also self-proclaimed as Kyoya's fiancée but has since become interested in Haruhi. She has yet to discover Haruhi's real gender. She loves video games to a point that she sometimes confuses them with real life. Her fascination with Kyoya originated from her obsession with one such dating game (Kyoya greatly resembled the lead character). Still, her experience with dating sims causes her to be more aware of character development and thickening plot. In the anime, she almost always enters using a rising platform powered by a high powered motor, even when the host club is off campus.

In the anime, Renge is often used as a means for Bones (the studio that animates Ouran Host Club) to make references to their past works. For example, in one of the beach episodes, she "cosplays" Read (See Read or Die), wears a bikini to show off the tattoo of Quon Kisaragi (See RahXephon) and mentions in a later episode that "Even Edward dealt with a cross with willpower and guts", referring to Edward Elric (See Fullmetal Alchemist).
However, she does not need to be present in order for a "Bones reference" to happen; Hunny's response to being woken up early (according to Tamaki and the twins) is apparently a Bunny version of Eureka Seven's Seven Swell Phenomenon.

A hooded figure holding a cat puppet, he hates bright light - to the point that he calls the perpetrators 'murderers' (though there is one exception). The Black Magic Club’s president, he tries to get people to join his club. Anyone who joins gets a free "Beelzenef" doll. Nekozawa has one as a puppet, but it is also available as a wooden doll. Nekozawa claims that if you write the name of the person you hate on the back of the doll, the person will be showered with misfortunes. Tamaki, especially, is superstitious about Nekozawa's curses due to having experienced them (or so he believes).
Nekozawa is actually quite handsome under his hood, although wears a black wig over his naturally blond hair. He has an adorable little sister, though she hates the dark and didn't believe Nekozawa was her brother until recently. The Nekozawa family traces their lineage to the Tokarev Dynasty in Russia (or it could be Romanov).
Ryouji Fujioka

Ryouji Fujioka

Haruhi's father who works at an okama bar and is one himself. All the members of the club also comment that he and Tamaki act almost exactly alike, though Ryouji considers Tamaki an enemy. This rivalry could have something to do with protecting his daughter like many fathers tend to do or may have come about because of his first meeting with Tamaki where he had found Tamaki when he had accidentally fallen on top of Haruhi.
He worries about Haruhi all the time and wishes she would act a bit cuter. He often tries to get her to wear more feminine clothing and once even packed her suitcase with female pajamas before she left on the trip to the beach in episode 8 of the anime.
After his wife died, he tried his best to act as both the father and the mother in the family, but it was difficult for him, especially since he had the bear the loss of the woman he loved. Thus, he is a cross-dresser.

Host Club

The Ouran High School Host Club was started by Tamaki in his first year at Ouran High School. In there, handsome teenage boys with a lot of time, wealth, and beauty can entertain girls that have just as much time, wealth, and beauty on their hands. During the time the girls attend, Host Club members can be designated, which means a specific host is asked to entertain them. Host Club members all have different ways of entertaining their guests and at other times, greet all of their customers at once.

Usually, the Host Club is set in a large room filled with furniture, food and drink. Host Club members sit around and talk with their customers about anything the girls bring up. Sometimes, the club room has a specific theme to heighten the experience of the customers and to make it more interesting for them; various themes include a tropical setting or a traditional picnic.
