OutWeek

Encyclopedia : O : OU : OUT : OutWeek

OutWeek Magazine was published in New York City from 1989 to 1991, and it chronicled gay life and activism during a time when AIDS was in the public consciousness worldwide. Its publisher was Kendall Queer and the editor in chief was Gabriel Rotello. Columnist Michelangelo Signorile created the activity later coined as "outing," in which he opened the closet doors for many famous people but especially those who were secretive about their gay lifestyles while concurrently supporting anti-gay messages, such as music mogul David Geffen, whose company Geffen Records distributed records by Guns N' Roses, whose leader singer, Axl Rose, often wrote about and railed against "faggots."
