Outerbridge Crossing

Encyclopedia : O : OU : OUT : Outerbridge Crossing

The Outerbridge Crossing is a cantilever bridge over the Arthur Kill connecting Perth Amboy, New Jersey with Staten Island, New York. Known locally as the "Outerbridge", it is part of a popular route on NY-440/NJ-440 from the south and west to New York City and Long Island.

Tolls are collected in the eastbound direction only. The cash toll is $6 for passenger vehicles. Users of E-ZPass pay a discounted toll of $5 during peak hours (6-9 am and 4-7 pm) or $4 at other times.

It is a steel truss cantilever construction, designed by John Alexander Low Waddell and built under the auspices of the Port of New York Authority, now the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which currently operates it.

It opened simultaneously with the Goethals Bridge on June 29, 1928. The design of the bridge is very similar to that of the Goethals Bridge.

The name of the bridge is something of an anomaly in that its name seems to suggest its function. It is the "outer" (that is the most southern) bridge of both the State of New York and of Staten Island. In fact, it was named for Eugenius H. Outerbridge, the first chairman of the then-Port of New York Authority and a resident of Staten Island.

In recent years, the bridge has undergone numerous repair jobs as a result of the high volume of traffic that crosses the bridge each day.
